Let’s face it: if your business isn’t online, it’s invisible. But not just any website will do. Your website has to work harder than your best salesperson—24/7, no lunch breaks, no sick days. Yet, for small businesses, getting a high-converting website can feel like buying a private jet: out of reach.
It’s January 22nd. Donald Trump is the 47th president of the United States. Tariff threats loom over Canada from our closes and biggest trading partner. Inflation in Canada is finally back down below 2%. Bitcoin is trading close to $105,000 USD. And here you are reading an article about how to choose the perfect digital agency for your business. Good for you.
If you’ve been in business long enough, you’ve probably already had the realization that you can’t do it all (by yourself). Every great business depends on a team, and you can either build capabilities in house, partner, or acquire them. The same applies to digital capabilities within your business. And that, I assume, is why you’re looking to find an agency to partner with.
Finding an agency to work with is challenging – mostly because there are so many crappy agencies out there that will sell you a dream, outsource the work to some VA in a third world country, and deliver you horrible results. And there are a LOT of agencies out there. With so many options out there, all promising to deliver game-changing results, how do you know which one is the real deal? I get it—it’s a big decision, and the stakes are high. So let me simplify it for you.
I’m Abdul-Aziz Sardar, and my career has been about helping businesses grow. I studied business management at Western University, followed by years in sales, finance, and management consulting in downtown Toronto. During that time, I worked with Fortune 500 companies to develop innovative strategies and business models.
There are a lot of lessons I’ve learned – but the most important one I’ve learned is that finding good partners is super difficult. The same way it’s difficult to find good employees, good friends, etc., etc. And when it comes to finding a digital marketing agency, you want a partner that doesn’t just deliver results but also adapts to your needs, collaborates with you, and sticks around to make it work.
Why Choosing the Right Agency Matters
Your marketing agency isn’t just a vendor—it’s a partner in your success. The right agency helps you create strategies that drive leads, increase revenue, and build your brand. But the wrong one? Well, it can cost you time, money, and momentum. Think about it this way. Your brand has a reputation, and the wrong agency can mean not only lost money, but irreparable harm to your brand. (Think Jaguar’s recent disaster of a rebranding attempt).
Here’s a tip from my experience: it’s always best to work with someone local, someone you know and trust who comes with strong references. When an agency is local, they’re motivated to deliver exceptional work—they can’t exactly run away from it.
No business is perfect, including agencies, but what sets the great ones apart is their willingness to partner with you, adapt, and align with your goals. That’s what you’re looking for—not perfection, but commitment and collaboration.
Before you even start your search, ask yourself: what does success look like? Are you aiming to boost sales, improve brand awareness, generate more leads, or all of the above? Having specific goals helps you filter through agencies and find the ones that align with your needs.
Pro tip: Be specific. Instead of saying, “I want more traffic,” try, “I want a 20% increase in website traffic within six months.” Specific goals make it easier to measure success and hold everyone accountable.
You can’t market effectively if you don’t know who you’re speaking to. Identify your ideal customer:
Look for agencies that take the time to ask about your audience—it’s a sign they’re serious about creating targeted campaigns. Bonus points if they’ve worked with similar audiences before.
This is where you start separating the pros from the pretenders. Look at their portfolio and case studies. Have they worked with businesses like yours? Do they have measurable results to back up their claims?
Here are a few things to check:
A solid agency will be transparent about their process and results. Don’t hesitate to ask tough questions—good agencies will have answers.
There’s something to be said for working with a team you can meet face-to-face, especially if they’re from your local area. It builds trust and accountability. When an agency is close to home, they’re more invested in their reputation, and that means they’ll go the extra mile to deliver exceptional work.
Trust and references matter, too. Ask for recommendations from people you know or other businesses in your network. Agencies with strong references are usually the ones that deliver.
